ABOUT THE FILM
At the height of the COVID-19 lockdowns, I came across a 1972 Arriflex 35BL, the first silent 35mm film camera, on eBay from a recently defunct production company. For a bargain it was mine, and over the course of several months I ordered parts and restored the camera to working condition. Thanks to faded labels on the equipment and a few emails and phone calls, I was able to track down the camera's past. This particular unit had been used on a number of legendary productions including Stanley Kubrick's The Shining.
With the world locked down, I set out with this marvellous cinema machine and a skeleton crew to tell an intimate story on a large scale about our precarious relationship with the natural world. Now more than ever we're reminded of the limits of our dominion over nature, the bounds of our understanding, and the challenges of our world. Its formidable power and fragile beauty.
